In many posts on this blog – and on travel sites about Rome – there has been much talk of the expected taxi fare increase in Rome. The taxi drivers union has been a strong supporter of the current mayor of Rome and in their eyes – it’s payback time … But not so fast!
After numerous meetings, hearing, debates, protests, etc. (sounds like the US government in the past year), the City of Rome has announced…. that at least until June 8th … the current rates will remain in effect. So until then, it’s still €40 to get a taxi from the city center to Fiumicino (FCO) and €30 to get to Ciampino Airport. For more info on the fixed rate rules and a map of where exactly these rates apply, see our post on The Fixed Rate Taxi Zone.
Almost a year ago, the City of Rome announced there would be increases and I think everyone accepted
that this was inevitable. From that date forward, a lively debate has ensued. With the next hearing not set until June 8th, the TAR (Regional Administrative Tribunal) has in effect, suspended the fare increases. And to add insult to injury for the drivers and their union, now it’s not clear that these increases will ever go into effect. Personally, I predict a another taxi strike – The picture at the top of this article is from a 2007 taxi driver work stoppage!
So enjoy your trips back and forth from the airports – at the current, fixed-rates. I’m sure eventually these rates will change – but it appears later rather than sooner!

Currently, YES – still at 40 euros.
We will be going to Rome in a few weeks. Is the FCO to Rome (within the Aurelian walls) still 40 euros?
