The most “asked” question regarding hotels in Rome is probably, “Where do I stay in Rome?” Undoubtedly, the next most popular query often is, “What hotel should I stay in at the FCO airport?” I have to admit I’m not a fan of the airport hotels near the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport. Fiumicino, where the airport is located, is a small coastal town. Some of the airport hotels are in industrial or warehouse areas so you will be limited to the hotel’s restaurant and services during your stay. When you’re out at an airport hotel… you’re out there!
Most people stay in Fiumicino to be close to the airport… so many of the airport shuttle capabilities for these hotels are highlighted in red. Other than the Hilton Airport Inn, which is connected to the airport, you CANNOT walk to any of the other hotels or B&B’s located near the airport. You must take a taxi, arrange private transportation, or if available, use the hotel’s airport shuttle.
The shuttle information in this article is taken from the hotel websites – and also from investigating the comments by previous visitors (sometimes the hotels are known to “overstate” their shuttle services). Many of the shuttles do not start until 07:00 (or later)… so if you’re booking out at Fiumicino because you have to get to the airport at 05:00 or 05:30, then you’ll probably still have to take a taxi. Know your options before you book.
The good news – you’re close to the airport. The bad news – you may have to get to the airport by taxi… and that would be a Fiumicino taxi, not a Roma taxi. Rates are higher and there are fewer cabs available as compared to the city of Rome. So you might have to wait for a taxi to arrive. And you’ll pay €15-25 for the ride to the airport; additional fees can apply for more than two folks or luggage pieces. You’re 5-10 minutes away from the airport, but it will still cost you perhaps €20 or more to get there.
For me, I’d rather stay in the city my last night and enjoy Rome at night. To get to these airport hotels, you’d have to ride a train or bus out from Rome – then catch a shuttle to the hotel from the airport. This is the least expensive way. The other alternative is to get a private shuttle or taxi out from Rome to the airport hotels. Then of course, on your day of departure, you’d have to get to the airport from the hotel – If it’s early, you may have to book another taxi. All of this can add up in time and money.
Me, I’d rather walk around Rome, enjoy a great meal in my restaurant of choice, and then catch a €48 taxi ride to the airport – or if it’s later, use the Leonardo Express, the Terravision bus, or the SITBus Shuttle. If you’re out at an airport hotel, you’re going to be limited in dining options and you might spend the evening watching Italian TV! I’d rather be walking the streets or enjoying a cafe in Rome. But if you’re at the end of an extended vacation, a cruise, you have a rental car to drop off/park, or you’re just tired… then an airport hotel might work best for you.

You’ll see that there are many duplicate hotels in the www.booking.com and www.venere.com lists – Booking.com lists 45 hotels within 10 km of the airport; Venere.com only 20, so we’ve listed the top hotels for each search engine. The chain based hotels, Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport, Comfort Hotel Roma FCO by Choice Hotels, Hilton Rome Airport, and Courtyard By Marriott Rome Airport Hotel scored lower than expected in the consumer rankings.
If you read through all the comments, you’ll see that this is primarily because folks have stayed in these “branded” hotels in the USA – or other locations – and these Fiumicino branded hotels, in many instances, failed to lived up the guests’ expectations (based on previous experiences with these brands). Many of the negative comments focused on the shuttle service for the “branded” hotels… I suggest reading the comments on any airport hotel before booking.

So this is a list of the “best” of the available hotels near the FCO airport. If you have a rental car, many DO have free parking. That info is located in the detail or services section on the booking sites. Do research the shuttle options if this is a service you will need. If so, so include a “shuttle request” in the comments section of your booking. Many require 24 hour notification or a “seat reservation.” I’d certainly follow-up with an email.
I suppose, for me, staying at the airport is not my most preferred option. Yet, I’ve lived in Rome and I’m quite comfortable with all the different modes of transportation and the timing of getting to FCO – even at 04:30 AM. I’ve done it too many times! Yet I do understand the need to be close to the airport – although I’ll be in town my last night! After 2-3 weeks on the road, folks often want the comfort of knowing their last night in Europe will make for an easy transition the following morning.
