Often, many people stay near the Roma Termini for an easier train or airport connection. The SITBus, Terravision, and the Leonardo Express all start early in the morning – or at least early enough to make a 07:30 flight at FCO or CIA. If your flight is much earlier, you may need a taxi or private shuttle.

Folks also stay in the Termini area because… well, it’s cheap – or at least as inexpensive as anywhere you can stay in Rome.

Booking.com lists more than 400 hotels and B&B’s near the Roma Termini station. Many are simply 3-5 room, smaller hotels. So do be selective as you do your search! Because there are SO many options, we’ll look at 25 options per site.

The Roma Termini train station is not located in the central area of Rome. It’s more northeast of the center of town.yet the transportation options here – it’s the hub for bus, train, and metro connections – make it easy to get to anywhere in the city. Like many neighborhoods around transportation hubs in Europe, the Roma Termini is not … picturesque. It’s a very blue-collar, functional, active, “working” area of the city. Although not the prettiest area, it is generally safer for visitors than the rap it often receives. Petty theft and pick-pocketing is quite prevalent in and near the train station so do be careful. But it’s not a “dump” or an unsafe environment.

Staying near Roma Termini you’d be best served to take advantage of the bus and metro options. You might read Riding Trains in Italy, Riding buses in Rome, and The Metro in Rome for helpful suggestions on using these transportation modes. I’d certainly look at these options – especially when coming back home at the end of your day. Roma Termini is uphill from almost all sites in the central section of town. I’d certainly rather ride a bus than climb uphill to my hotel. There are smaller stores, markets, and restaurants near the station – and three McDonald’s (two inside Roma Termini)!

When looking for the “best” places to stay, we again used the www.booking.com and www.venere.com search engines. As I mentioned in other postings, I used both these sites when I lived in Europe. I preferred using www.booking.com. To me, their site has better resources/options to allow me to sort hotels by specific services – like swimming pools, parking, shuttle services, hotel theme, etc. Venere.com does have a great deal of reviews in their system. They also work with many smaller hotels and family B&B’s.

That said, below is a map of the 25 best places to stay in the Roma Termini area, as rated by www.booking.com and www.venere.com visitors. Now these are NOT the least expensive – which many folks search for when looking at this part of town – these are the “best-rated.” In order to rank the hotels in either system, you must have stayed there and booked through either company – so these rankings are based on actual stays, not “internet posters” stuffing the ballot box. As you can see from these lists, many of the hotels and B&B’s in the Roma Termini are less than 10 rooms. In some instances, some hotels are located at the same street address. That’s because one “hotel” is on the 4th floor… and another is on the 3rd floor… and so on. Often these hotels and/or B&B’s in this area are converted apartments  all combined on one floor to create a “hotel.” It’s often a good idea to find out if your smaller hotel has an elevator  – especially if it’s on the 4th floor. Be ready for MUCH smaller elevators if it’s your first time to Europe!
