Best Hotels and B&B’s in Trastevere

Trastevere is a beautiful part of Rome, and one of our favorite places to head to. The name, Trastevere, literally means “beyond (or over) the Tiber.” Once you cross the river and into Trastevere you’ll find narrow streets seemingly from the medieval period.

In previous times, Trastevere was a working-class neighborhood. Today it’s an eclectic mix of traditional shops, cafes, trendy bars, internet cafes, restaurants, college students, and visiting tourists. Trastevere is still an area of town I go to get lost in.

With smaller, winding streets and picturesque lanes, this area has a unique personality. You’ll see wash out to dry, locals headed to work – or just hanging out – and the Virgin Mary looking down from street corner shrines. The heart of Trastevere is the Piazza di Santa Mari – a square lined with restaurants, cafes, and the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. We’ve often walked to the Porta Portese Market on Sundays and just wandered slowly back through Trastevere. Once you get off the main streets, it’s a great part of town to just walk, far more “intimate” than the centro, more touristy, area of town!

At night, Trastevere gets pretty lively! College-age students flood the area due to the proximity of smaller colleges and the inexpensive apartment options. Trastevere is home to John Cabot University – a private American University, the American Academy in Rome,  the Rome campus of the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, the Canadian University of Waterloo School of Architecture and the American Pratt Institute School of Architecture.

Many of our younger friends live in the Trastevere neighborhood. They enjoy the late-evening atmosphere. I’d caution you not to get a hotel room on a ground floor as there is plenty of foot traffic well into the evening. We often go to Trastevere to dine. It has some of the best – and traditional – restaurants in town. We went to a birthday celebration for a friend ours and started dinner around 21:00. We finished “dinner” around 01:00. When we headed out from the restaurant the streets were packed – and we were by far the oldest folks in the crowd. Since we’d had a few glasses of wine and limoncello – and we were driving our motorino – we decided to walk a bit. We were in the streets until about 02:15 and decided to head home… the streets were still filled!

It’s a unique atmosphere and we’ve always enjoyed our late-night experiences in Trastevere. Read this article on the #8 Tram in Rome to gain more insight into how to get to Trastevere and various maps of the neighborhood.

When looking for the “best” places to stay, we again used the and search engines. I used both these sites quite often when I lived in Europe. I preferred using To me, their site has better resources/options to allow me to sort hotels by specific services – like swimming pools, parking, shuttle services, hotel theme, etc.

That said, below is a map of the 20 best places to stay within the Trastevere neighborhoods as rated by and travelers. In order to rank the hotels in either system, you must have stayed there – so these rankings are based on actual stays, not “internet posters” stuffing the ballot box. The blue markers correspond to the top 20. The orange numbers represent the rated hotels and B&B’s. Use the “+” or “-” symbols to zoom in and out on this Google Map.

You’ll see that there are many duplicates in the and lists – and also that many of these hotels are smaller, with fewer rooms. You might want to book earlier if you plan on staying at one of the smaller, more popular hotels or bed and breakfasts.
