Too many years ago, as I prepared for my first trip to Italy, I stumbled upon the cartoons of the brilliant Bruno Bozzetto. Mr. Bozzetto is a talented Italian animator born in Milan in 1938. He started publishinghis cartoons in 1958. His most famous character, a hapless little man called Signor Rossi, has been the star in multiple short films and three feature films. Bozzetto’s works are often filled with political humor and his “cultural” short films are quite satirical. He has been quite successful, winning numerous International Awards and also being nominated for an Academy Award in the United States.
In 1995 Bozzetto started working in Macromedia Flash – and that has led to numerous YouTube postings. Currently, he is still animating and working on a project with the Disney corporation. His website has a wonderful great collection of his films.
The FLASH video that I found years ago in my research – and it’s probably one of his most famous – is simply titled, “Europe and Italy” (Italia e Europa). It satirically looks at the differences between Italians… and the rest of the European community. If you’ve ever been to Italy, you’ll nod in agreement – and laugh – as you watch this video. No Italian habit – from driving to drinking coffee goes unscathed. If you’re headed to Italy for the first time, watch this…and then watch in when you return home. If you’re Italian you may have to be a little tolerant as you watch this…
Europe and Italy (1995)
The Goethe-Institut: Okay?!
A short film exploring the differences between Germans and Italians.
Now you’re ready for your Italian vacation!
Bozzetto has also also focused on other targets – and no matter what your background, culture, or language, his cartoons always hit their mark! Here are some more, regarded as some of his most popular … unless you’re the target of his pen.
A Dyseducational Road Movie – How to Drive, Yes or No?
Have any of these happened to you?
Female and Male (2005)
The Olympics (2003)
Mr. Otto shows you how NOT to participate. You have to love the high-diver’s persistence.
Freedom (2005)
One of my favorites, produced in 2005 by the Council of Bergamo. “Freedom” celebrates 60 years of freedom in only 60 seconds.
