Elizabeth, if you’re traveling only for a few days in Italy, you’re outta luck. If you’re staying for an extended time (a couple of months or more), you can get an IDP online through AAA for about $66. Or, you can try emailing a scanned image of your drivers’ license, completed and signed application form, and passport sized photo to friends/relatives in the States. They can go to a AAA office and submit the paperwork and some AAA locations will give them an IDP. We’ve done it both ways, and of course, always renew when we head home. We’ve also given our license, photos and forms to friends headed back to the States for a week… and then they bring us back the IDP. Depends on the “position” of the AAA office you utilize.

Thanks for the helpful tips. What would you recommend for an American already in Italy? What is the best/fastest way to obtain the IDP once already here?
