Renting a car in Italy can be an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, driving a rental car in Rome is often NOT enjoyable. For many folks it can be frustrating, confusing, and even dangerous. Driving in Rome IS NOT like driving in Tuscany. But many folks pick up their rental cars in other parts of Italy and need to return the car in Rome. In this posting we will look at the major rental vendors who have locations in the city. We’ll also show you alternatives to dropping off in Rome and also locations outside the city. With this knowledge – and the included map – we hope this will give you an advantage as you look at your car rental options in Rome.
At the end of the posting are links to numerous alternative vendors, primarily consolidators such as AutoEurope, who can find you even lower prices than the larger, international brands. In almost every case, when booking through a consoldator, you will end up in a primary vendor vehcile. There are also some local companies listed and for many folks, they may not help you as you will probably be driving all over Italy… the exception might be Maggiore, which is one of the largest local brands – and affiliated with two US companies.

Here’s a map of the agencies located in Rome, Chiusu, Civitavecchia, Orvieto, and Viterbo. Looking at this map, it looks a little crowded. Use the “+“ or “-” signs on the top left side to zoom in or pull back, and then use your mouse to grab and move the map to wherever you need. Around the airports and train station, ALL the nameplates of the vendors who rent there are located. You may have to zoom in to see each individual nameplate. Below the map, you’ll see all the listing ON THE MAP – from each vendor. Do verify the hours of operation as this information is as current as the information on each vendor’s website.
For a larger. Google map you can print, Click Here
As you look at the map, you’ll see red and yellow markers throughout town. These are perhaps the easier places to drop off a rental car. The yellow markers also have train and metro connections and thus may be the best spots if you’re looking to drop off a car and use public transportation. The blue line you see near Roma Termini is the return route to the Rental Car Garage. (a yellow #3 on the map). This is a one-way road (and you’ll be heading from the front of Roma Termini towards the rear of the train station). As you get to the tunnel on your right, get into the 2nd lane heading right – NOT the closest (or first) lane!

Maggiore
Maggiore is a large group, with access to 20,000 cars in Italy. They have a relationship with the National/Alamo groups. So if you rent from Alamo or National around Rome (or Italy) you’re probably working through a Maggiore franchisee or office. Maggiore also operates separately from National/Alamo and here are a few of those offices.

Other “Drop-Off” Options
Because Rome is perceived as a difficult place to drive – and on some days it can certainly be difficult – many people choose to drop off their rental car as they head towards Rome. The most mentioned drop-off points are Chiusi and Orvieto. We’ll show you maps with locations of the available car rental agencies and the train stations. In addition, we’ll also show you Civiitavecchia and Viterbo. Civitavecchia is the cruise port for Rome and many travelers start – or end – their Roman adventure there. We’ll mark the rental agencies, the train station, and the port entrance.
Viterbo, often overlooked, is a wonderful walled city that also has train and rental car connections. Although not as convenient (by train) as Orvieto or Chiusi, it’s still an interesting place to see!
Chiusi
From wikipedia: “The lowlands around Chiusi are a treasure trove of tombs for this civilization. The Etruscan Museum of Chiusi is one of the most important repositories of Etruscan remains in Italy.
Other sights include:
- The Romanesque Cathedral (Duomo) of San Secondiano, built around 560 AD over a pre-existing basilica, and renovated in the 13th century. It has a nave and two aisles supported by antique columns. The Sacrament Chapel houses a Nativity and Saints by Bernardino Fugai. It has a separated bell tower which was turned into a defense tower in 1585. Under the tower is a Roman swim pool dating from the 1st century BC.
- The so-called “Labyrinth of Porsenna”, a series of tunnels under the town, built in the 6th-5th century BC and probably utilized in Etruscan-Roman times for drainage of rain waters. According to Pliny the Elder, the Labyrinth was part of a monument including the sepulchre of the King Porsenna.”
Chiusi is served by an exit off the A1 Highway, the primary road from Florence to Rome. It has also a train station on the railway connecting to Rome and to Florence. The train station is called Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. On the Trenitalia website, you can search for routes from this station by simply typing: Chiusi. From Chiusi, a regional train can get you to Rome in about 1:48 minutes for a –current – cost of 14,10€ and 9,10€ (1st and 2nd Class respectively). If you ride the IC train from Chiusi, it will cost you 22,50€ and 17,00€ (current BASE prices on the Trenitalia website). The IC trains are only about 10 minutes faster… as they take about 1:37 to make the trip to Rome. Both “international” rental vendors, Europcar and Hertz, are convenient to the train station.

Civitavecchia
The cruise stop for Rome – it’s a little more than an hour to central Rome from Civitavecchia by train. The Regionale trains start as low as 4,10€ to some stations in Rome. So Civitavecchia is not just a port stop, but also perhaps a great spot to drop off a car and catch the Regionale or IC trains into Rome. On the map above, #6 is the Civitavecchia Train Station and #7 is the Entrance to the Port of Civitavecchia.

Orvieto
You can pick-up or drop-off your car in Orvieto, and thus avoid driving in Rome. A regionale train from the Orvieto station will go through Roma Tiburtina station, ending its journey at Roma Termini. The cost is 11,00 € and 7,10 € (1st class and 2nd class as of March 1, 2011) and your trip will take about 1:21 – 1:28 hours. Or you can get there on an IC train. You may be more comfortable, but you conly save 10-15 minutes! The trip run is 1:11 hours from Orvieto to Roma Termini. The costs are currently 20,00€ and 14,50€ in 1st and 2nd class. You can see our article, Riding trains in Italy, for more insight into these two types of trains.Note – the Hertz location is 2.3 km from the train station.

Viterbo
The train ride from Viterbo to Rome takes almost 2 hours – eventhough it’s closer to Rome than many of the other options mentioned. Yet Viterbo is one of our most liked cities. A beautiful, walled city with multiple markets and one of our favorite bakeries in Italy. A wonderful spot to take a break, see a smaller town, and drop off your rental car. You can ride from Viterbo Porta Fiorentina or Viterbo Porta Romana stations to multiple train stations in Rome or you can ride the Rome-Viterbo railway which ends at the Piazza Flaminio Metro station.

Renting a car in Italy can really enhance your enjoyment of the country. Driving up the Amalfi coast in your rental car is certainly more fun than the same trip in a tour bus. Using a reputable car hire company is important, as is making your reservations early for the best prices and selection.
I rented a car in Sorrento and drove all over southern Italy for a week plus, relying on http://www.viamichelin.com to keep me from getting too lost finding my way to Hertz in La Rustica . This post saved me from returning the car to Termini as I was able to leave it in La Rustica, coming in from Vieste and Pescara.
Small detail that you should know is that I needed to take a bus from the Hertz curbside stop to the Rebibbia Metro station (1 euro) and then the Metro for about 7 stops to Termini (also 1 euro). Pretty easy and only 30 minutes to Termini – you cannot walk to the train station from the Hertz office. Eric
