Lo Spaccio – The Prada Outlet

Prada outlet
From Anothertravelguide.com

Someone emailed me and asked me to post this info .. so here goes! We’ve been to LO SPACCIO, the Prada Outlet many times… Depending on the time of year, day of the week, and time of day… you’ll find different “deals” available. My wife is an avid shopper so she never leaves disappointed. You can take advantage of the VAT savings if you’re heading out of the EU. For more info on the VAT refunds, read this, although it really pertains to a Rome “departure”.

The outlet mall is located outside the town of Montevarchi, which is about thirty miles south of Florence on the A1 autostrada. Coming from Rome, it’s about 180 miles (250 km) and will take you about 2.5 hours to drive. It’s a little hard to find as it’s located in the back of a warehouse complex. But now they have added a huge sign (first photo below) so it’s MUCH easier. If you get lost, ask any local and they can redirect you. Below a few photos of the exterior of the the SPACE Outlet

I’d get there ealier in the day for the best selection. When you arrive, you have to get a “entry number” out of the stainless steel machine by the front door. Prada limits the number of shoppers in the building at one time. As they tell it, “So they can deliver the proper level of service.” Might have more to do with theft prevention…

So once get your number from the machine (top photo) you can spend your time waiting in the cafe’ next door. What could more Italian than to fuel up on caffe’ and then go shopping? A regular routine for my wife! Usually you will wait no more than 20-25 minutes, but your wait-time will depend on the trafic flow – and the number of tour buses that pull up.

When you go in, you need to hold onto your ticket. It serves to identify you. Each time you make a selection the staff will ask you for your “number” (from your ticket) and then take the merchandise away. NO Shopping cards are necessary in the Prada outlet. Wouldn’t want you to be deterred from spending MORE! The staff in the Prada outlet is quite helpful and multi-lingual. I’ve never carried anything for more than a minute before someone came up and asked me for my “code.”

Your merchandise is stored in a bin for you… and when you check out, telling them your ticket number, this HUGE stack of merchandise magically appears. You’re thinking, that’s ALL mine? You can sort through as you pay. This is the point where my wife tells me to go away, get another coffee from the cafe’ outside.

Is it worth taking a trip to? That depends probably on you! It is an outlet – but it’s at the HIGHEST end of the “outlet” scale. Prices are great – but you’ll still might pay $400 for that $1,200 purse. There’s no 99-cent bin in this outlet. These are first-rate Prada (and the other “names” they own) products. Some of the items did not pass Prada’s strict quality standards and others ARE from last season. Everyday the merchandise changes. No one can really tell you what they have in stock unless they were there the day before… and even then, in a day, the merchandise changes dependent on the number of visitors.

There is no website – specific to this location – from which you can order these goods. If you buy there, they will not ship goods “home.” You have to carry your purchases out. Thus, to get these deals, you have to physically go to this (or another) Prada outlet. Such is the draw. My wife… she KNOWS it’s a deal (or so I’ve been told – often)!

This Google Map may help you. Don’t worry if you drive by it – everyone does. It looks like a bunch of warehouses and the Prada Outlet is all the way in the back. Thank goodness they finally put a sign out front. Before that, it was almost impossible to find! Guidebook.SE does a great job with directions. Click here and page down to their website for maps and explicit directions from multiple locations.

Remember, if you’re a US citizen driving in Italy, you will need an International Driver’s Permit.

In Conclusion

I much prefer the cheaper alternative: Inexpensive Shopping in Rome! But going to LO SPACCIO, the Mall, and other outlets in Italy can certainly be an experience! My wife certainly enjoys our trips. I always found this TIME Magazine article quite humorous! I’ve felt just like this guy a few times!

Good Luck and don’t forget to get your VAT receipts!

A car is the easiest method and they are so close, it depends on where your next stop is… Your net best options is one of the many “bus shopping” tours.

My husband and I are planning to do a day trip to visit both The Space outlet (Prada outlet) at Montevarchi and the The Mall outlet at Leccio, Reggello on the same day. Can you help guide us on which outlet should we head to first and what is the best (and if possible, cheapest) mode of transportation to and fro Florence and the outlets?

    Thanks Ron!

  3. Ron in Rome says:

Unfortunately, you cannot order online from this outlet and the product changes every day. You have to physicaly go to the store to shop from this location.
