The Roma Cavalieri

romacav The Roma CavalieriThe Roma Cavalieri, once a Hilton and now flagged as a hotel of the Waldorf Astoria Collection, is one of the premier hotels in Rome. It’s also one of the most discussed hotels on the travel boards. Many people cash in their Hilton points – lots of points – to stay at the Roma Cavalieri. As you pull up to the Roma Cavalieri , the surrounding neighborhood will not impress you and outside of the hotel looks like something built in the sixties. But the Roma Cavalieri will impress you as you enter and walk through. The side of the hotel facing Rome has incredible views. Here, you begin to see some of the beautiful fifteen-acre manicured grounds.

The Roma Cavalieri is certainly a luxury hotel, has a tremendous art collection, a great pool and spa, and one of the finest restaurants in town, La Pergola. But it does sit on a hill about 3.5 miles from the center of town. Transportation options are more challenging to this location.

Getting to the hotel is the first step. As it is outside the Aurelian Walls, the taxi agreement does not work here. Thus, from wherever you ride in a taxi to this hotel you will always be on the meter. If you’re coming in from Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (Fiumicino – FCO) the hotel can offer you transport – but their service starts at about €75 for a couple. If you take a taxi, on the meter from FCO, you’re looking at a minimum of €45-50. Taxi costs to the Roma Cavalieri from the airports are quite inconsistent. Primarily because you are supposed to leave FCO on a tariff 2 fare and then switch to Tariff 1 – but often the drivers “forget” and the meter runs on the higher tariff 2 rate – Welcome to Rome!

Your best bet may be to book a private service. There are many shuttle companies available in metro-Rome. I often use www.romecabs.com or www.romashuttle.com. Both do a great job!

Once you get to the hotel, you can use the hotel’s free shuttle to get to Rome city center. The hotel shuttle leaves for downtown on the half-hour with gaps for lunch in the afternoon. It used to stop at 10 PM, but do check with the hotel. The shuttle will drop you off near the Vatican – see map below – but the primary stop is at Piazza Barberini (pictured above). If you are returning to the hotel, you can catch the shuttle from Piazza Barberini at the top of the hour. It stops on the northeast corner of Piazza Barberini near Via Veneto. It takes about 20-25 minutes each way, depending on traffic and time of day.

vaticanstop The Roma CavalieriAs you can see from the map, the drop off near the Vatican (see red marker above) … is not too near the Vatican. Be prepared to hike!

There are also multiple buses that can get you down the hill into Rome. To do this, you have to walk down from the hotel to the street, Viale della Medaglie d’Oro (Circled in blue). You can ride the 907, 913, 990, 991, or 999 down the hill on this street. From the bottom of the hill, you can continue on your bus of choice or jump off and catch the metro at Cipro Station into all parts of Rome (see bottom of the map). Some of these buses stop at the Cipro Metro, others head toward Piazza Cavour, a major bus hub. The concierge at the Roma Cavalieri can certainly help you work through the routes.

Thus, you can have many bus options from that part of town – and the shuttle. Taxi rides from the center of town vary (E15-20) but when you say Roma Cavalieri ….. €€€€€€€€…… the drivers’ eyes light up! The shuttle and the buses can offer you a good alternative.

Room service in the hotel is quite expensive… a coke might cost you €10-€12. And once you return to the hotel, you’re on top of a hill and there’s not ANYTHING except the hotel on the top of that hill. So if you’re going to get something to take back to the hotel, get it before you get on the Roma Cavalieri Shuttle or in a taxi. If you ride the public buses, you will have to climb UP THE HILL from Viale della Medaglie d’Oro. It’s not far, but it is steep!

Just below the hotel on the “Rome” side (Via Trionfale) is a GREAT restaurant, The View, We’ve eaten there often and it offers great food and an incredible “View” of Rome. A little pricey, but well worth it!

    Hi, Ron,

I recently discovered your blog, and have been reading it obsessively! My husband and I will be staying at the Roma Cavalieri (as you’ve noted, we selected it to use our “points”) during our first trip to Rome. Thanks for any advice. I also want to mention how much I liked Copenhagen – what a beautiful, friendly city. I hope that you enjoy living there!
